BBQ RIBS 70 PITTSBURG PISCES 65
Ribs balanced attack is Pitts undoing
Kevy pulled off the clean sweep in the Spring A leagues as he captured his second title within the week. Despite being played on the first night of the new league and in between two regular season games, both teams tried to give the fans the championship flare that it desperately needed. Early on in the game, it seemed that both teams may have been trying to hard as Josh and Contact McClaren should have brought pens and vacation packets instead of whistles as they were acting more as travel agents than referees. In the first half alone there were at least 10 calls for happy feet! Despite all the turnovers, the Pisces had a five point edge, as Jim Meldrim was playing like he really wanted the brick, scoring a game high of 29 points. The Ribs troubles continued into the second half as the Pisces jumped out to a huge second half lead behind Dan Herman (16pts) and Raj (12pts). Then the Pisces hit the wall. The next 5 minutes saw all air balls and front rims for the Pisces. This was the critical part of the game, midway through the second half, as the Ribs capitalized on the waning Pisces. Kevy (13pts), Roache (19pts), Kurt (14pts), and Ramon (18pts) all contributed to the run that had them down 1, after a 2 Herman freethrows, with 1:30 left to go. The next possession down, Roache answered with a drive of his own. Down 1, the Pisces tried to go to Herm in the post on Kevy and the whistle blew…offensive foul on Herm for hooking, exit stage right as it was his fifth. Things would only get worse for the Pisces. After a Ribs turnover, the Pisces were inbounding, still up one. With a heads up play, Ramon crept up and snatched the ball, laid it up, and got fouled. The next trip down, Mike Roache took it to the hole, laid it in and got sent to the line. That pretty much iced the game for the Ribs as Kevy took cut down the nets, then quickly taped them back on as he realized that there were six other games to follow. Congrats to both teams for great seasons!

Quarterfinanls - July 11th

WHITE COLLAR CRIME 57 THE 9’S 54
Costly Webberlike T sinks The 9's
The This game was full of surprises as WCC pulled off a surreal win and sent the 9’s home with that bitter taste in their mouths. The beginning of the first half was kind to WCC as Tim Brady (17pts) was piling in the points, giving them a decent lead. Then midway through the first half, Shorey decided enough was enough and started outplaying everyone on both sides of the court. Along with blocking 4 shots, Shorey altered several others, helping his squad make a comeback by playing big in the 9’s zone. Offensively, Shorey (19pts 12rebs) was just as effective, hitting his jumper and fade aways like a pro. This had the 9’s up 8 at the break. Not only was WCC down at the half, they had a dark cloud hovering over them for most of the game. That dark cloud was foul trouble. The foul trouble became a factor just as WCC got the lead down to 4 in the second half JROD (16pts) fouled out, with 6 minutes to play. With JROD out, no one would have blamed WCC for giving up, but they played on. In true Rocky form, the underdogs dug deep and stepped up their game. With 3 minutes left, WCC’s Mike Turin (11pts) came up huge, nailing a 3 that tied the game. The game stayed tied until under 10 seconds when, again, Mike Turin drove to the hole and connected on a runner that gave WCC the lead with 1.9 seconds left. The 9’s instinctively called a timeout to stop the clock, but they got Webbered. They had no timeouts, but with only 1.9 left it probably wouldn’t have made a difference. After the T, WCC inbounded the ball and upset the 9’s. (JROD, looks like you got first round for Mike this Friday!) just kidding JROD.

PITTSBURG PISCES 81 A NIGHT IN PARIS 70
Meldrim and Herman lead second half charge
Well, when you win 90% of the time, I guess you have to lose the other 10% and this just happened to be the case. Without West, Paris still thought they could win, needing to play 2 perfect halves. When the game started, it looked as though we could pull it off. Danny Salazar was ridiculous the entire game, providing a game high 36. With Danny providing the scoring, the rest of the Paris squad was playing stifling D. We had a double digit lead going into the second half. Then my dreams of seeing “A Night in Paris” on a banner began to fade. Dan Herman (27pts) and Jim Meldrim (22pts) exploded in the second half. The entire Pisces team outscored Paris by at least 20 points in the second half. For Paris, the offense became stagnant and the shots that were usually made, just weren’t falling. The scoring drought allowed the Pisces to get the lead and never look back in the second half as, they too, upset a higher ranked opponent. OTJ, be kind.

CITY HACKERS 70 THE EXPLOSION 59
Undermaned Explosion can't stop Clancy
The Hackers followed suit, upsetting the higher ranked Explosion team, despite missing rookie sensation Ramon. The first half was tight as the lead fluctuated from one team to the other. The Hackers were getting balanced scoring from their entire squad and the Explosion’s firm of Bruger (21pts) and Hoffman (26pts) esq. were keeping pace, nipping at the Hackers feet, only down 2 at the half. This is where it gets sour for the Explosion. The Hackers came out in the second half and started bombing the 3. For a stretch Dave Haas (15pts) and Eric Clancy (27pts) put up 5 straight 3’s, giving the Hackers the edge that they needed. When the 3 wasn’t falling the combo of Aristoff and Bankhead pounded the Explosion D inside (combined 28pts). Hoffman and Bruger did all they could, but the Explosion just could not match up with the Hackers on offense.

BBQ RIBS 71 PORTUGUESSE MAFIA 56
Kurt and Ramon lead the Ribs into the Semis
Well the BBQ Ribs held their own and quite impressively, dominated the struggling PM team. The Ribs dominated early as Kurt (31pts) and Ramon (17pts 10rebs 6blk) were scoring at ease. For the Mafia, it was a struggle all game. It was like when in Rocky IV, Apollo Vs. the Russian, I just kept wanted to throw the towel in, fearing that the Commish was going to take a big hit that could have hurt him. I didn’t want to be Rocky and have that on my conscience. Luckily, the Commish didn’t get hurt, but BBQ put a hurtin’ on their D. The lead was at 14 at the break and stayed there all game, sometimes reaching 20 points in spurts. The commish did get 33 from Gaspar, but it wasn’t enough. The Ribs played like a 2 seed, actually like a 1 seed, but either way, they played intense team ball that will be tough to top. Could it be, 2 consecutive title for Kevy, any one smell a repeat?
