Warriors Code Takes the Brick!! Filosa MVP!! On a night when Kareem Benjamin was sitting on the sidelines (elbow), Evil Petting Zoo knew someone needed to step up to keep this game even close. The pre-game line for them was (+21) and that may have added a little motivation. Kenny Rivera (20 points) stepped up in a big way, leading EPZ with 18 first half points. They didn't just keep the game close, but they led for most of the opening frame. The crowd was behind them, and they looked like they'd be poised to make a "Miracle on the Hardwood" run in the second half.
But the Wolverine (28 points, 18 boards) would not be denied the Brick. A quick 3 point play before the half tied the game at 37, and he rallied the troups to start the second half. A decisive 14-2 run opened the game up and cemented Filosa's MVP award. Don't think this MVP award is some staff conspiracy, or a ploy to try and get more calls (although it wouldn't hurt). The Wolverine earned it in the paint, getting 7 offensive boards for a total of 10 second chance points. Ian Tosti (18 points) and the Born Gamer, JaySar (25 points), both shot themselves back into the game and turned in strong second half performance, building the lead to as many as 18. It looked to be the end for EPZ, but Sweens (23 points, 9 boards) and Gary (18 points) kept playing hard. Behind the duo, the score was trimmed to just 7 with 2 minutes to go. But in a game that saw a combined 50 free throws, Warriors Code hit enough down the stretch to keep the game in hand.
Another great A1 season comes to a close and congrats on both teams for great seasons. Now the question remains, can the Wolverine repeat with another squad? Will other superstars rise up to claim their first Brick? Who will be the next star to rise from the unkowns? All this and more will be decided in the Summer A1 Season!
