The B2 league is the 4th level of 5 CRFC Basketball offers. This was known as “B2 East” in the spring league, which was comprised of 4 corporate teams and one single entry team. This league is perfect for those who are looking to play in a league that is not too high in basketball talent in comparison to A1, A2 & B1, but is very competitive within it’s own league. The teams are comprised of some co-ed, corporate and over 40 teams. Other teams are made up of players who like to play basketball, get a run in, but not play as competitive as the A1, A2 or B1 leagues. If players who play in B1 are looking for another night/league to play in (B2) is it.

Winter 2005 B2 League Awards

The B2 league was in my opinion the most exciting and fun league of them all. As always, some new characters emerged - The Anvil, The Perfect Storm, The Manning Brothers (the most feared brother combination since the Menendez brothers), The Human Missile, and The Mechanic. We had a few very memorable plays like a full court shot by Richard Manning and Cobra Kai’s well crafted inbounds play with 5 seconds left that gave them the title. And, from the all good, I mean great, things come to an end file, we will lose on of the most popular figures in CRFC history – Primetime. A great year capped by a great Final and I enjoyed every moment. Well, maybe not the games that spilled past 10:15PM, or the day I took given it on the chin on the boards for not wearing an “official” ref shirt, but you get the idea. – WOLVERINE

Winter 2005 Champions - Cobra Kai

The men of Cobra Kai may just be my favorite group of guys because they, like me, don’t take themselves too seriously, know how to play a good brand of basketball and have some fun while doing it. They also happen to win the league title after finishing in 1st place during the regular season, capping it off with a game winning last second play for the ages. Congrats to Cobra Kai!

From left to right: Jose Torres, Duncan Prime, Rob Jensen, Team Captain Jeff Hall, Jeff Coburn, and on ground is Scott Sonia.

Most Valuable Player
Andre “Flash” Jones, Sasquatch & Duncan Prime, Cobra Kai

It was tough to decide between these two guys who is more valuable to his team so I picked them both. Hey, this is America – I can have both the double cheeseburger AND the chicken tenders if I want to and nobody can stop me! On the one hand you have Flash who does it all: rebounding, scoring, passing, defense. His energy was the heart beat of Sasquatch team. On the other hand you have Primetime. Not only has his myth reached epic proportions, but he is his team’s leader in scoring, rebounding and makes all the big shots when it matters most. I don’t think anyone can argue that these two guys are clearly the MVP’s of this league, so I am going to order the six piece tenders AND the quarter-pounder w/cheese.

General Manager of the Year
Justin Sawicki, Vanstry.com

In a controversy filled season for vanstry.com, Justin managed to keep his team together and finish a respectable 6-4 and make it all the way to the semifinals. He managed to fill a very large scoring void with not only his own play, but with the new guys he brought to the table. And anyone who can get the Diesel to show up to half the games has got to win this award!

Defensive Player of the Year
Cullen Roberts, Foot Clan

Think again before you decide to come into Cullen’s lane and throw up a weak attempt at a basket because this guy blocks everything in sight. He also altered almost every team’s game plan he played against. And I never once saw him do the Mutombo finger or yell after any blocked shot. A true class act.

Most Improved Player of the Year
Vin “The Anvil” Farina, Funk Soul Brothers

In the beginning of the season, I feared for the opposing team’s (and sometimes my own) life when I saw this guy driving to the basket. I’d rather try my luck dodging cars running south on Route 1 North than get in this guy’s way on a drive. But midway through the season, the Anvil improved his game greatly and became one of the better scoring/rebounding players in the league, showing a lot of athleticism to go along with the, umm, small amount of muscles he has.

Rookie of the Year
Keith Manning, Dennisport Laundry

A phenomenal rookie season for Keith as he lead his team in all categories. He runs the point, shoots the jumper, rebounds, and can drive the lane and score almost at will.

Wolverine's Award
Scott Sonia, Cobra Kai & Tom Kramer, Kerdan

Again, when faced with having to make a tough decision, I usually choose both. These guy’s get the award for very different reasons but both embody what the Wolverine admires most in a player. The Perfect Storm is a ball of energy that blows into every game, wreaking havoc wherever he goes - defense, loose balls, rebounds. Anything that requires a little extra effort, The Perfect Storm is there. Tom Kramer on the other hand, stands at no more than 5’10” and doesn’t seem to have any hops, but he rebounds like it is his only job and he has 10 kids to feed. His knack for gathering offensive rebounds gave his team many extra shots at scoring.

5th Man Award
Matt Cuccaro & Will Luera, Sasquatch

What do you ask for from 5th men? How about always showing up, being ready to play, contributing when needed, and encouraging peers. These two guys embody all that a teammate (and a spouse) should be. While they didn’t score that many points, they were critical to Sasquatch’s success all season long.

Winter 2005 (B2) League Finals

Cobra Kai 62 Sasquatch 60
I was fortunate enough to bump into The Reverend Jeff Coburn on my walk to work Wednesday morning. After I questioned him about the dainty white bag he was carrying, we got to talking about the upcoming championship game. His last words to me before we parted for work were “we just gotta get it done.” After being the #1 rated team all-season, it seemed the pressure was all on Cobra Kai to finish what they had started. And to add to the magnitude of the game, this was to be Duncan Primetime’s last game at CRFC as he will be moving on to practice some sort of law in New Jersey. If you are thinking about moving to New Jersey (not sure why you would be), I urge you weigh this fact heavily in your decision. As for the game, it started off quite boring actually, as Cobra Kai pulled out to an easy early lead behind Rev’s sharp shooting (17 points) and DJ Jazzy Jeff Hall’s explosive drives to the hoop (15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists). Everyone on Sasquatch looked very stunned as if they had actually seen BigFoot in the parking lot on their way into the game. The only one who apparently had no fear was Andre “Flash” Jones who carried this team on his back for the 1st 30 minutes of this game. He was everywhere and had a stat line to prove nit: 27 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 7 steals. Despite his efforts, Sasquatch still found themselves down 13 early in the 2nd half. Primetime began his normal act of heating up in the 2nd half (at this point, I think it’s sandbagging) w/17 2nd half points (23 overall) and 15 rebounds. The Perfect Storm Scott Sonia was adding his normal energy (6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) and Rob Jenson and Jose Torres were mopping up boards like they were Snickers bars at a fat camp. It was all but over with 10 minutes to go. But then I started to hear a very faint noise in the background of the game. I wasn’t sure what it was at first, but then the sound got louder. I looked around to see if anyone else was hearing it, but nobody seemed to notice. The noise was becoming clearer to me now as the minutes passed. Yep, I think I could now decipher it as I had heard it many times before. It was the loud thud of a Cobra Kai-lapse! Sasquatch emits one last gasp for life and goes on a fantastic 13-2 run behind huge threes from the three headed monster of Flash, Worm (15 points, 8 rebounds), and John “Rasheed’ Little (10 points, 14 rebounds). Cobra Kai obliged with a few turnovers and all of a sudden, down two with two minutes to go, Flash ties the game on a short jumper. The CRFC crowd was in hysterics, banging walls and screaming in support of the efforts by Sasquatch. It felt like it was 4AM at Rum Jungle at Mandalay Bay it was so loud in that place. After trading baskets, Cobra Kai found themselves with the ball and a tie game with 7 seconds to play. Can you ask for more in a championship game? Superstars, fans, a tie game, Primetime’s swan song, great refereeing, a very beautiful woman in the crowd? Unreal. Cobra Kai called a time-out and disappeared outside the court for a few seconds and I wondered why they were all so thirsty at such a critical moment in the game. Turns out they weren’t thirsty at all – they were busy designing the championship game winning play. As Jazz inbounded the ball, a perfect pick was executed for Primetime to break free down the court. Jazz passed it to him and there he was with the ball at half-court with nothing but slippery floors in his way for the championship winning wide open lay-up. I could hear Chris Berman doing the highlight now – “Primetime, Primetime, Primetime…” But instead of high-stepping it down the court, or at least doing the Karl Malone classic hand behind the head lay-up pose, Primetime looked as nervous as a plump turkey on Thanksgiving Day. For what seemed to take minutes, he took a few awkward dribbles and went up for the lay-up I am pretty sure off the wrong foot. It hit every inch of that rim and finally rolled in. Nonetheless, he hit it and Cobra Kai was up two with 2.7 seconds to play. A desperation half court shot from Flash fell short and Cobra Kai was the champion!!!!! We have all come so far in the B league and this was the best game of the night by far - a great culmination to a great season. Congrats to the men of Cobra Kai – it was a pleasure. Ditto for Sasquatch. See you next season, err, next week!!!!!! Special congrats to Primetime on going out not only a champ, but hitting the game winning shot, just like Jordan. Good luck to Primetime – the league (and the Wolverine) will miss him.

Winter 2005 (B2) League Semifinals

COBRA KAI 53 KERDAN 46
#1 seeded Cobra Kai came out in this one like a dog going in to get neutered - very jittery. Primetime was missing jumpers from just about every angle on the protractor. The Perfect Storm was severely under the weather (get it?) and couldn’t offer much help. Kerdan on the other hand was playing as if they had nothing to lose, well, because they didn’t given the fact they were big underdogs being without Jiggy and Marcovici. This gave Kerdan the edge early on as they jumped out to an early 10 point lead behind the sharp shooting of the Man Only Known as Renat (23 points, 16 in the first half). The only player keeping Cobra Kai even remotely in the game was The Reverend Jeff Coburn (17 points, 14 in the first half) and his hot shooting from the outside. Despite the Rev’s 1st half performance, #1 Cobra Kai found themselves down as much as 13 in the early goings of the second half. But the second half has historically belonged to Primetime, and he came out hitting 3 of his first 4 three pointers to bring his team within 7. Kerdan held on during this initial run as Tom Kramer (8 points, 10 rebounds) and Mike Levinson (10 points, 5 assists) made some big shots. But Primetime’s energy (20 points, 12 rebounds) seemed to lift the rest of his team as DJ Jazzy Jeff Hall awoke from his 1st half slumber with 12 points, 8 assists. And once this team gets rolling, they are tough to stop and Cobra Kai eventually took the lead over the hard fighting Kerdan team. Primtime continued to hit his shots, Jazzy hit his free throws, and all of a sudden Kerdan found themselves down 5 with just a few minutes to go. Kerdan gave their best but may just have ran out of gas in the end after a tough win the night before. Cobra Kai moves on to the Finals and Kerdan ends a strong season in the semifinals despite a lack of players for the playoffs.

SASQUATCH 68 FOOT CLAN 54
With John “Rasheed” Little cheering his team on from the sidelines, Sasquatch steamrolled into the finals with an easy win over the Foot Clan squad. Andre “Flash” Jones seemed to have some extra energy in this one with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals. To me it was his best offensive performance when his team needed it most. The Worm Jeff York was also at his best with 24 points, 8 rebounds with a few of his old school (yes, B League can now have old school) moves that earned him his nickname. Foot Clan was never really in this one as they could not find a defensive stopper nor an offensive response. Cullen Roberts had a solid game with 14 points, 9 rebounds and Dave Stein heated up in the second half (28 points, 6 rebounds), but it was too much Sasquatch. Even Mike Marksmanship joind in the fun with 18 second half points. Pre-season #1 Sasquatch faces regular season #1 Cobra Kai will face off in a much anticipated B2 final. Despite all the great play by the teams in the league this season, these are the two teams who were clearly the cream of the crop all season long.
